The nomenclature and limits used for the different areas in the auditory cortex or layers in the SC are shown in Figure 1. The different layers of the SC were defi ned as in previous studies in the ferret (King and Hutchings, 1987; Meredith et al., 2001; Nodal et al., 2005), which are based on an earlier description of the SC in the cat (Kanaseki and Sprague, 1974).
