Citation The ferret’s PBN is situated along the lateral margin of the midbrain just ventral to the brachium of the inferior colliculus. It forms a slight bulge on the lateral surface of the brainstem. In Nissl-stained sections, this compact nu- cleus appears to be made up of densely packed, deeply stained, small- to medium-sized neurons. Fig. 1 illustrates the location of the PBN in frontal, horizontal and sagittal planes. The nucleus is roughly egg-shaped with its largest Ž. area in the sagittal plane Fig. 1 .
