Citation "Three auditory areas have been identified on the surface of the ectosylvian gyrus by a variety of methods (Kavanagh and Kelly 1987; Wallace et al. 1997) and these can be identified by characteristic changes in the density of myelinated fibres (Fig. 1). The middle ectosylvian area (ME) has a much higher intensi- ty of myelin staining than the ventroposterior area (VP). In tangential sections VP has a patchy distribution of myelinated fibres with two or three patches being mod- erately intensely stained. By contrast the area of tempo- ral cortex ventral to it shows almost no myelin staining in the grey matter (Fig. 1). The orientation of the tan- gential sections in Figs. 1–4 is shown in Fig. 2D. The ventroanterior area (VA) has a similar staining intensity to the ME, but usually there is a slight reduction at its ventral and dorsal borders that allows it to be delineated"
