Striate cortex in the ferret can be identified by several anatomical techniques. In Nissl stains (Fig. 1C) layer 4 tends to merge with the supragranular layers 2 and 3. Layer 5 in contrast is a cell-sparse layer containing a few large neurons ... The borders of area 17 (Fig. 2) are most easily established in AChE preparations, as the conspicuous AChE-poor band corresponding to layer 4 in area 17 does not persist in area 18. The border is also discernible in CO-reacted sections, where area 18 has a wider band (250-325 pm) of dense activity, extending as peaks into layer 3. In Nissl- stained sections, the boundaries are more difficult to detect, but can still be identified by the greater neuronal density of layer 5 in area 18 and the appearance in this area of large 3C pyramidal neurons, defining the upper border of layer 4. A border zone about 1.0 mm wide exhibits characteristics transitional between areas 17 and 18. |
